As part of this consultation I wish to comment on the use of snares. I understand that the Welsh Government has recently set out its plan to ban the use of snares in Wales. I fully support this and I am delighted that once again Wales is taking the lead in the UK.
In my opinion however the ban needs to go further if it is to be as effective as possible. A further ban on the manufacture, sale and possession of snares would ensure the complete absence of snares in our country.
Additionally the ban must include so called humane snares. There is no such thing and this type of snare cause harm to ensnared animals in that they cause terror for the trapped animal.
All snares are indiscriminate they catch any animal unfortunate enough to come across it including on occasion pet dogs and cats.
Please ensure that Wales continues to show the way in animal welfare and ensure these outdated and barbaric things are consigned to history where they belong.
Yours
Christine Topping
